The Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the Universities of Coimbra, Lisbon and Porto intend to organize a Conference, aimed at the scientific community and the general public, designed to raise a reflection on the meaning and role of the social sciences and the humanities in the context of society and knowledge. It is intended that this reflection arises from a dialogue with the various fields of knowledge, bringing together representatives from diverse disciplines and areas of knowledge, testifying their mutual enrichment and, above all, the indispensability of the contribution of the whole.

Social and human sciences are essential to understand social memory, to construe its behavior and its civic expression, to raise awareness on the heritage and cultural diversity, to understand personal fulfillment and collective ideals.

The Humanities study the course of Humanity and help to foresee the future. By emphasizing a critical perspective and a creative response, including the study of languages, literature, history, law, philosophy, religion, the arts, the Humanities foster the creativity, the perception of common and specific reality, the knowledge of human nature in its the social and historical context. Social sciences feature our societies patterns, throughout the time, and at present. Using the scientific methods of natural sciences, social sciences, including anthropology, political science, sociology, communication sciences, study and perceive behavioral and organizational processes. As a whole they help to better understanding the meaning of humanity, and to promote the collective sense of the global community we live in.

Each one of all areas of knowledge is essential to the development of creativity and to individual and collective fulfillment. The remarkable scientific achievements in recent centuries alongside the invaluable contribution of basic and applied research in the physical and biological sciences have decisively contributed to improve social wellbeing, but It should be understood that the humanities and social sciences have always been at the heart of this improvement which justifies the allocation of more resources in research and formation.

The conference “In the Heart of the World: Science Network in a Global world ” comprises four moments, proposing four approaches fostering the reflection and a a debate on the Global World we inhabit: Feeling the World, Meeting the World, Thinking the World Ruling the World.

The lecturer introduces the theme, which is followed by a roundtable bringing together experts / scientists from different disciplines, who will present their perspective on the theme.

The contributions of different disciplines, allow a joint reflection on each of these themes, illustrating the complementarity and mutual enrichment offered by an a transdisciplinary dialogue including the humanities and social sciences and humanities.
